Flat Double Spiral Stitch Basics

Flat double spiral stitch is one of the easiest beading stitches you can learn! It is also the best stitch to start using for your first beading projects and design ideas. Perfect for absolute beginners with zero beading experience!

Beads

You will need:

  • Seed beads size 8/0
  • Seed beads size 11/0 color A
  • Seed beads size 11/0 color B

Tools and Materials

  • Beading thread. I used Fireline
  • Beading needle size 10 or 12

Why Flat Double Spiral?

You may use this technique for bracelets and necklaces.

The flat double spiral is at the core of a couple of my designs:

Boann Necklace

Nortia Bracelet

The pink color double spiral you see in the video was made for my Heart Sweater.

Flat Double Spiral Instructions

Cut a big piece of beading thread and thread the needle with it. Use a comfortable length of the thread. I typically start with a yard and a half.

Place a “stop” bead. Use any bead that is different from the beads you are using for this project. The “stop” bead helps keep your beadwork together in the beginning.

Pick up two seed beads size 8/0 and five seed beads size 11/0 color A. I called the darkest pink seed beads Color A in this tutorial.

Stitch through the two seed beads size 8/0 again.

Push 11/0 beads to the left.

Pick up five seed beads size 11/0 color B. I called light pink seed beads Color B in this tutorial.

Stitch through the two seed beads size 8/0 again.

Push beads color B to the right.

Pick up one seed bead size 8/0 and five seed beads size 11/0 color A.

Stitch through the last 8/0 bead and then through the 8/0 bead you’ve just picked up.

String five seed beads size 11/0 color B and stitch through the last seed beads size 8/0.

Continue adding beads following this scheme until you reach the desired length.

Happy beading!
