Peyote Stitch Cylinder Tutorial

Why would you make a peyote stitch cylinder?

To me, it is a beaded element you can use in many jewelry designs. I started with a simple necklace. The peyote stitch cylinders served as decorations, and as the bail for the pendant. You may try to make a similar necklace, or come up with a new idea on how to incorporate these beaded elements.

In this video, you will learn how to make a simple peyote stitch cylinder.

Beads

For this tutorial, I used seed beads size 8 of two colors. I think this a better way for you to understand this process visually. However, in beadwork design, we usually use beads of colors we need.

For the Peyote stitch cylinder, you need to weave a rectangular piece of flat peyote stitch beadwork. If you need help learning, please, check out my Even-count flat peyote stitch tutorial.

What kind of rectangular you have to weave depends on how long and how wide you want your cylinder to be. In other words, you need to decide what would be the purpose of this cylinder.

My rectangular was eight rows with an initial row consisting of 8 beads.

After making a square or rectangular peyote stitch cylinder, you have to zip it up.

Zipping Up

Zipping the peyote is a common term used by beaders. It means connecting two sides of peyote beadwork by stitching through both of them at the same time.
To start zipping, you need to make sure that one side of the beadwork interlocks with another. If not, add one more row, until it happens.
Please, follow the video tutorial to learn this easy process.

Zipping up peyote stitch is an essential skill for any peyote stitch beader.

Finishing Up

After you sip up two sides of the beadwork, make sure to reinforce. I do it several times because it is crucial for me that the cylinder stays strong when I use it for the design.
Then, of course, weave in the thread tail and hide the end of it in the beadwork.

Making a Peyote stitch cylinder, you will switch from flat beading to 3D in minutes. It is the easiest way to transform your flat beadwork into an element you can use in jewelry pieces and combining with stringing technique.
